How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants (Even Before You Call a Pro)

At Pest & Lawn Organic Guard, we understand that sometimes you want to handle a pest problem yourself—especially when it comes to Carpenter Ants. So, we’ve put together this in-depth guide to help you track them down and knock them out on your own.

And if you ever get stuck or don’t want to play hide-and-seek with ants at 7 a.m., you can always give me a call.

What Are Carpenter Ants, and Why Are They in Your Home?

First things first—Carpenter Ants don’t eat wood. Unlike termites, they’re just carving out little condos in soft, decaying wood where moisture is present. If you’ve got Carpenter Ants, you’ve got moisture problems, and that means something is rotting nearby.

Where Do Carpenter Ants Nest?

Over the years, I’ve found Carpenter Ant nests in some wild places:

  • Inside rotting trees, especially at the base where the trunk meets the soil
  • In tree crotches or broken palm fronds (Cabbage Palms are a favorite)
  • Under the 2×8 lumber on either side of a garage door
  • Inside attics
  • Under a toilet brush (yep, really happened)
  • Even inside the door of a Ford Ranger

Moral of the story? If there’s moisture and something soft to burrow into, they’re game.

Step-by-Step: How to Find and Kill a Carpenter Ant Nest

  1. Poke Around Outside
Grab a stick and start checking all the likely outdoor spots—rotten wood, base of trees, palm fronds. When you hit the nest, trust me—you’ll know. They’ll come pouring out.
  2. Be a Morning Stalker (Seriously)
If you can’t find the nest, here’s my trick:
    • Show up early in the morning.
    • Watch where they go.
Carpenter Ants head back to the nest in the morning. Follow them, and boom—you’ve found the nest.
  3. Spray the Nest
Once you find it, just about any contact insecticide will work (Raid, etc.). Make sure it’s labeled for the area you’re using it in.

Can’t Find the Nest? Here’s What to Do:

If all else fails, it’s time to bait them.

  • Outdoor Nests:
Use granular baits like Terro or Bayer products. They’re available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Amazon.
Important: Only apply them when it’s dry! If it’s wet, they won’t touch it.
  • Indoor Nests:
Use gel baits, also available on Amazon. Apply them cautiously, especially if you have kids or pets around.
Pro Tip: Clean thoroughly before baiting. If there are food crumbs everywhere, the ants will pick the buffet over the poison.
I mean, would you eat poison if there was an all-you-can-eat buffet nearby? Didn’t think so.

When to Call a Pro

Carpenter Ants are smart, stubborn, and sometimes just plain sneaky. If you’ve tried all this and still can’t get the upper hand, I’m here to help. I’ve been tracking down ant nests across Brevard and Indian River County for over 20 years—and yes, I’ve even climbed a few trees in the process.

FAQ’s; Carpenter Ant Treatments

GENERAL CARPENTER ANT QUESTIONS

Carpenter ant swarms typically occur in Brevard and Indian River Counties during the spring and summer months, primarily from April to June. The exact timing can vary based on weather conditions, particularly after rain showers.

Swarming activity is most common in the early morning or evening hours.

A key difference between carpenter ants and termites lies in their body shape. Carpenter ants have a distinct, narrow waist, while termites have a thicker, more uniform body.

Physical Appearance:
Carpenter Ants: Larger, with a distinct segmented body and elbowed antennae.
Termites: Smaller, with a straight, uniform body and bead-like antennae.

Swarming Behavior:
Carpenter Ants: These ants swarm in smaller numbers and often fly erratically.
Termites: Termites swarm in larger numbers and fly in a more coordinated manner.

Carpenter ants don’t actually eat wood; they excavate it to create tunnels for their nests. These tunnels can weaken the structural integrity of the wood and make it more susceptible to damage.

90 days

Carpenter ants are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant and animal matter.

Their diet primarily consists of:

Honeydew: A sugary substance excreted by aphids and other insects.
Other Insects: Carpenter ants are predators and will consume other insects, including termites.
Protein-rich Foods: They are attracted to protein sources like meat, pet food, and dead insects.
Sweet Substances: Carpenter ants are also drawn to sugary liquids like fruit juices and nectar.

Carpenter ants can cause significant structural damage to homes by tunneling through wood. They can weaken wooden beams, joists, and other structural components.

Carpenter ants can enter homes through cracks and crevices in the foundation, walls, and roof. They are often attracted to moisture and decaying wood.

While carpenter ants aren’t typically aggressive, they can bite if provoked. Their bites can be painful and may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. It’s important to use caution, especially if you’re sensitive to insect bites.

The most pestivious ants on the barrier island are Bigheaded Ants, Ghost Ants, Fire Ants, Argentine Ants, White-Footed Ants, Caribbean Crazy Ants, and Rover Ants.

CARPENTER ANT TREATMENT

Our Carpenter Ant Pest Control Service is 299.00 and Guarantees elimination of carpenter ants.

For immediate relief from a carpenter ant infestation, professional spraying is the most effective method. Unlike slower-acting baits, our expert treatment can have your home carpenter ant-free in as little as 24 hours.

Yes, most of the time. Carpenter ants are highly mobile and can pick up their nests and move them to new locations, including attics. Even if the attic isn’t a suspected problem area, I often treat it with a thorough dusting to ensure complete protection.

Carpenter ant nests in attics can be tiny and nearly impossible to locate. By dusting the entire attic, I can eliminate hidden nests and prevent future issues. This proactive approach ensures a more effective and lasting solution, so you don’t have to deal with recurring infestations.

Carpenter ants often nest in moist, decaying wood, making the base of plants, trees, and bushes a prime location for their colonies. Additionally, they frequently establish nests in the crowns of palm trees—especially queen and cabbage palms—but they can nest in the tops of any palm tree. Carpenter ants are also attracted to rotted spots in trees, which serve as excellent nesting sites.

By treating these areas, I target the common nesting and foraging spots carpenter ants use to establish colonies near your home. Furthermore, plant scale and aphids produce honeydew, which attracts carpenter ants. By addressing these pests during the treatment, I can help prevent carpenter ants from being drawn to your property in the first place.

This thorough approach ensures a more comprehensive treatment and reduces the likelihood of future infestations.

Yes! We provide Carpenter Ant Treatments in Sebastian, Grant/Valkaria, Barefoot Bay-Micco, Palm Bay, West Melbourne, Melbourne, Suntree, Viera, Rockledge, and Merritt Island.

CARPENTER ANT PREVENTION

While it’s impossible to eliminate the risk of a carpenter ant infestation completely, taking preventative measures can significantly reduce the chances:

Tree and Plant Maintenance:
Trim back branches and vines that touch your home.
Remove dead or decaying wood, including stumps.
Store firewood away from your house.

Regular Pest Control:
Schedule regular pest control treatments to monitor for and eliminate infestations early.
Inspect your home for signs of damage, such as sawdust or small holes in wood.

Remember, carpenter ants can be persistent pests.

Carpenter ants, particularly winged swarmers, are a common sight during specific seasons. While you can’t entirely prevent swarming, you can reduce their attraction to your home:

Minimize Outdoor Lighting: Turn off outdoor lights at night, as they can attract swarming ants.
Proper Landscaping: Keep woodpiles, mulch, and other potential nesting sites away from your home’s foundation.
Professional Inspection: Call meat 321-704-0434 to identify and treat any existing infestations.
By taking these steps, you can minimize the impact of carpenter ant swarms on your property.

Carpenter ants are drawn to moisture and decaying wood. To deter them, fix leaky pipes, remove rotting wood, and seal entry points.

While DIY methods like baits and sprays can be effective for minor infestations, severe infestations often require professional treatment. Our experienced technicians can identify the source of the problem and eliminate the entire colony.

To prevent carpenter ant re-infestation, it’s critical to address the underlying conditions that attracted them in the first place.

This includes:

Fixing leaky pipes and faucets
Removing decaying wood
Sealing cracks and crevices
Using preventive pest control treatments
Regularly inspecting your home for signs of infestation.
